  6. INTRODUCTION
  7. ------------
  8. INI ProFiler is a powerful, easy-to-use utility for reviewing
  9. and editing the contents of the initialization, or ".INI",
  10. files used by Microsoft Windows and/or Windows applications.
  11.  
  12. Most .INI files used by Windows are written in ASCII text
  13. format.  As such, they may be easily edited with most text
  14. editors or word processors, including Windows Notepad.
  15. Windows 3.1 itself includes a small utility, called SysEdit
  16. (SYSEDIT.EXE), which automatically loads initialization and
  17. system configuration files for editing.
  18.  
  19. Although such editors offer a convenient way of making changes
  20. to a given .INI file, they also make it extremely easy to
  21. mistakenly make the wrong change in the wrong place.
  22.  
  23. Unless the user knows precisely what changes to make in an
  24. .INI file, and how to make these changes correctly, it is
  25. actually quite easy to hurt the performance of its host
  26. application.  In the case of a corrupted WIN.INI or SYSTEM.INI
  27. file, Windows itself can actually be prevented from
  28. functioning correctly.

  30. INI ProFiler offers a safe, "hands-off" method of editing .INI
  31. files, and combines the best features of an editing utility and
  32. a reference tool in one!
  33.  
  34. INI ProFiler can load any ASCII-compatible .INI file used by
  35. Windows or Windows applications, and display groups of entries
  36. section by section.  Changes to a selected entry may be easily
  37. entered in a single edit control and then "spliced" into the
  38. .INI file with the touch of a button.  Best of all,
  39. context-sensitive help is available for selected files and
  40. sections.  INI ProFiler provides comprehensive documentation
  41. and sample entries to several of the most important sections
  42. of CONTROL.INI, SYSTEM.INI, WIN.INI, and a whole host of other
  43. Windows .INI files.

  45. With INI ProFiler, your Windows system configuration can be
  46. optimized quickly, easily, and with complete safety.  And even
  47. if you don't make any changes, INI ProFiler and its help system
  48. can be a great way to familiarize yourself with the "inner
  49. workings" of Windows initialization files.

  53. PROGRAM FILES
  54. -------------
  55. The INI PROFILER package consists of six files:
  56.  
  57. README.TXT
  58. A small ASCII text file, containing release information and
  59. installation notes.  This file may be opened and read with any
  60. text editor, such as Windows Notepad, that accepts ASCII
  61. format files.  The README.TXT file should be read before
  62. installing or using this program.

  64. INIPRO.EXE
  65. The executable program file.
  66.  
  67. INIPRO.HLP
  68. The Windows Help file, used for providing comprehensive
  69. run-time help.  A registration form is included in the Help
  70. file; both it and any other Help topic may be easily printed
  71. through the Windows Help menu bar "File/Print Topic" command.

  73. INIPRO.TXT
  74. This file, containing program information, notes, general
  75. instructions, and an ASCII text format registration form (see
  76. end of file).

  78. INIHLP.HLP
  79. A Windows help file containing context-sensitive help topics
  80. accessed by the program when selected files or sections are
  81. loaded.
  82.  
  83. VENDOR.TXT
  84. An ASCII text file for reference by software distributors.
  85.  
  86. A seventh file, INIPRO.INI, is automatically created the first
  87. time the program is run, and is stored in the default
  88. Windows directory (e.g., C:\WINDOWS or C:\WIN).  This file is
  89. used for storing the program's configuration information.

  93. PROGRAM NOTES
  94. -------------
  95. INI ProFiler runs within the Microsoft Windows environment
  96. (versions 3.1 or higher), and requires the following:
  97.  
  98. * VGA (640x480) or higher graphics resolution.
  99.  
  100. A mouse or other pointing device is highly recommended, but is
  101. not required.

  105. PROGRAM INSTALLATION AND SETUP
  106. ------------------------------
  107. Although INI ProFiler can be run from a floppy disk, we
  108. strongly recommend its installation to a hard disk.
  109.  
  110. 1. MAKE A BACKUP
  111. We recommend making a backup copy of your program disk.  Keep
  112. the master copy in a safe place and use the backup disk for
  113. program installation.

  115. 2. COPY THE PROGRAM FILES TO A TARGET DIRECTORY
  116. Copy the program files (INIPRO.EXE, INIPRO.HLP, and INIHLP.HLP)
  117. from your master disk to an appropriate subdirectory on your
  118. hard disk (e.g., C:\INI or C:\INIPRO).

  120. There are no hidden files or "key" files on the program disk,
  121. so the file copying process can be accomplished with the DOS
  122. "COPY" command or, if you prefer, through the Windows File
  123. Manager File/Copy command.
  124.  
  125. This file, INIPRO.TXT, is not required in order to run INIPRO.
  126. The main program files (INIPRO.EXE, INIPRO.HLP, and INIHLP.HLP,
  127. however, are required, and must reside in the same drive and
  128. directory in order for the program to work properly.

  130. Strictly speaking, INIHLP.HLP is not required by the program
  131. per se.  But, without this file, INI ProFiler's essential
  132. context-sensitive help topics will not be available from the
  133. program.

  135. 3. ASSIGN A PROGRAM MANAGER ICON
  136. You may use the "Windows Setup" utility to setup a program
  137. item (icon) for INIPRO.  Windows Setup will recognize the
  138. INIPRO.EXE file and assign its icon to a program group for
  139. you.

  143. You may assign a program item icon to INI ProFiler manually,
  144. through the File/New commands in Program Manager.
  145.  
  146. Always make sure that the correct path and filename (e.g.,
  147. "C:\UTILITY\INIPRO.EXE") is assigned to the INI PROFILER
  148. program item.  The "Browse" control in the Program Item dialog
  149. box will make it easy to locate and assign the correct path
  150. and filename.

  152. 4. RUN THE PROGRAM
  153. If installed correctly, the program should load from the
  154. Program Manager screen when the INI ProFiler icon is
  155. double-clicked (or from File Manager when the INI ProFiler
  156. file listing is selected with "File/Run" or double-clicked).

  158. 5. TROUBLESHOOTING
  159. If you have problems getting the program to run take the
  160. following steps:
  161.  
  162. a) Make sure you are running the correct version of Microsoft
  163. Windows, and that your other hardware/software requirements
  164. (memory, video, etc.) are met.
  165.  
  166. b) Make sure the correct program path and filename is
  167. associated with your Program Manager icon.
  168.  
  169. c) Make sure all program files are together in the same
  170. directory.
  171.  
  172. d) If the program still will not run, you should re-copy the
  173. program files from the master disk.
  174.  
  175. e) Make sure the INIPRO.INI file is located in your default
  176. Windows directory (e.g., C:\WINDOWS) and is not tagged with
  177. the "Read Only" or "Hidden" attributes.

  181. GETTING STARTED WITH INI PROFILER
  182. ---------------------------------
  183. Although INI ProFiler is fully operational the first time it
  184. is run, the program offers a number of configuration options
  185. for "fine tuning" its performance and controlling some of its
  186. features.  Among these are safeguards for confirming a number
  187. of "mission critical" actions and the ability to enable or
  188. disable the automatic creation of backup files.
  189.  
  190. All configuration options are available from the Configuration
  191. dialog box, accessed via the program's menu bar
  192. "Options/Configuration..." command.

  194. Confirmation Options
  195. --------------------
  196. The following confirmation options are available (and highly
  197. recommended) for requiring user confirmation prior to selected
  198. command actions.

  200. Confirm on Program Exit
  201. Requires user-confirmation whenever INI ProFiler is closed.
  202.  
  203. Confirm on Section Deletion
  204. Requires user-confirmation whenever an .INI file section is
  205. selected for deletion.
  206.  
  207. Confirm on Keyname Deletion
  208. Requires user-confirmation whenever an .INI file section
  209. keyname (and associated entry string or value) is selected for
  210. deletion.

  212. Confirm on Entry String/Value Save
  213. Requires user-confirmation whenever a new .INI file entry
  214. string or value is to be saved.

  216. Backup Options
  217. --------------
  218. The following backup feature options are available for
  219. controlling the manner in which INI ProFiler handles file
  220. backup creation and naming.  It is recommended that new users
  221. enable INI ProFiler's program's file backup feature,
  222. especially when loading and editing important system files
  223. like WIN.INI or SYSTEM.INI.
